Watermelon Carving Contest

A Butterfly’s gotta eat!

We are releasing Live Butterflies in our Memorial Ceremony & we need to feed them!

Along with their favorite flowers we are feeding them watermelon. One of our event staff came up with the idea of a carving contest! We loved the idea, part of the mission of this event to to learn to have fun again, whether you are a carver, or just judging them it will be fun! And the pictures at the release will be amazing!

So here’s the information:

What we want:

Hand carved watermelon that has a lot of the red inside exposed so that the butterflies can easily feed on them. We will show some photos below.

We will have 3 Catagories:

  1. Kids 12 & Under
  2. 13 and up non-professional culinary student or chef
  3. Professional chefs and culinary students

The Rules:

The watermelon must be delivered to the Doubletree Hotel Downtown Spokane on August 18, 2012 to the registration booth for Grieving In Plain Sight by 11am. Judging will be from 12:30 to 1:30pm and then the feeding to the butterflies will begin shortly after 2pm. The watermelon must stand alone and not roll (you can shave off a portion of the bottom so it is flat) At the end of the ceremony after the filming is done, you may take your watermelon home, or you can feed it to the ducks in Riverfront Park after the Butterflies have flown off.

What’s in it for you? Mostly fun & your 15 minutes of fame! $50.00 cash prize for each 1st place winner in each category.

We will be filming the watermelon as part of the event documentary. We will do a short interview with each winner as we set the watermelons in place for the ceremony. This video will be uploaded to you tube where you can copy it and save it for sharing with your friends and family. You will also be given a personal butterfly to release in the memorial ceremony. You will be allowed to attend this amazing part of the event, seated in the watermelon carvers section. We ask that you give utmost respect to the attendees and speakers as this is a sacred ceremony, no talking, laughing or cell phones ringing.

Below are some pictures we found from emails and the internet, we do on own these pictures, and if they are yours, please let us know and we will give you proper credit.

Sample Ideas of what we want…So cool!

Remember we need the red exposed to feed the Butterflies!

These are beautiful, but not enough red showing, and no scary faces or animals that eat butterflies!
